FUTURE PLANS

The Norwegian Emigrant Museum has two goals for the future.

A collection is the first basis for the existence of a museum, and our first goal can be stated in six words: we intend to expand our collections. The museum will continue to collect, collate and register all types of source material about emigration, immigration and return migration. Such sources include (but are not limited to) letters, photos, paintings, pictures, interviews, video and audio tapes (and phonograph records of Norwegian-American music), and all objects connected with emigration and emigrants, from the houses built to the "I love Lutefisk" buttons worn in "17. Mai" processions – in short anything at all that anyone, anywhere in the world might possibly find relevant to the story of Norwegian emigration.

Along with the work of collecting, a museum must disseminate knowledge. Therefore, our second goal is also briefly told: we will tell the story of Norwegian emigration, immigration and return migration to everyone with an interest in this part of our history, especially children. To reach the public, the museum will use all available media, such as temporary and permanent exhibits, books, journals, radio and television programs, and video and audio DVDs.
